Here we are in the midst of the Coronavirus lockdown 2020. A world in shock and reeling from unexpected radical change, just now steeling itself to navigate the likely painful exit from this catastrophe.

And what has this drawing got to do with all of this? Well I have gone back to reading old books about Africa and revisiting stories and legends from my past – some more true than others. The mysteries of Great Zimbabwe, the influence of Arab trade routes up the east coast of Africa. I have watched Joanna Lumley’s Nile on YouTube and the Lost Kingdoms of Africa – all of which took me off down a little imagining of my own.

It’s the Monsoon; there’s a storm coming and this man is looking out across the sea from the shelter of his ‘office’ on the beach. He is both concerned and slightly annoyed at the same time. How will this storm affect the catch and the Dhows coming down from Tanga? He knows there’s not much he can do. It’s in God’s hands – insha’Allah.
