Description:
Markets in Africa are deeply intertwined with the lives of African women. These spaces allow them to shine and express themselves freely, where commerce, social interaction, and self-expression unfold on their terms. Take Mrs. Malukimba, for example - a dressmaker in Maramba Market, Livingstone, Zambia. Unlike many who sold the second-hand clothing that flooded Africa in the 1980s and 1990s, devastating the local cotton and garment industries, Mrs. Malukimba specialises in creating traditional African dresses, and she takes great pride in her craft.
She exudes confidence and wisdom - a true embodiment of resilience and cultural pride.
Here, form is explored through meandering lines that flow naturally across the page. I allow the eye and hand to coordinate freely, resisting the urge to let the mind take control and tighten the composition. In these drawings, I also experiment with placement, intentionally leaving ample space for the drawing to breathe.
